Makalu Barun National Park protects the area around Makalu (8,463m), the world's fifth highest peak, and encompasses one of the most dramatic altitude gradients on Earth - from 435m to 8,463m within just 40km. The park's Barun Valley is one of the last pristine valleys in the Himalayas, harboring an extraordinary diversity of life including snow leopards, red pandas, Himalayan tahrs, and over 400 bird species. The park contains 25 species of rhododendron and pristine cloud forests. It is one of Nepal's least visited national parks, offering true wilderness solitude.
