Budhanilkantha Temple houses the largest stone carving in Nepal: a magnificent 5-meter reclining statue of Lord Vishnu lying on a bed of serpents in a small pond. Carved from a single block of black basalt dating to the Licchavi period (5th-6th century), the statue is one of the most impressive works of art in the country. The temple is an important pilgrimage site where devotees come to worship the sleeping Vishnu.
