About Tengboche Monastery
Tengboche Monastery (Thyangboche) is the largest Buddhist monastery in the Khumbu region, dramatically situated at 3,867m on a forested ridge with Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam towering behind it. Founded in 1916, the monastery is the spiritual heart of the Sherpa community and hosts the famous Mani Rimdu festival each autumn. The monastery was rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1989 and features beautiful murals, a giant statue of Buddha, and a peaceful courtyard surrounded by prayer wheels.
