Traditional Nepali lamb curry with potatoes

Ingredients

  • - 2 lbs lamb, cut into pieces
  • - 2 cups potatoes, cubed
  • - 1 cup onion, sliced
  • - 1 cup tomatoes, chopped
  • - 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • - 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • - 1 tablespoon cumin powder
  • - 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • - 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • - 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • - 3 tablespoons oil
  • - 2 cups water
  • - Salt to taste
  • - Fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions

    Heat oil in a heavy pot. Add onions and fry until golden brown.

    Add ginger-garlic paste, cook for a minute. Add turmeric, cumin, coriander, and chili powder. Stir well.

    Add lamb pieces and brown on all sides.

    Add tomatoes and cook until soft. Add water, bring to boil, then simmer covered for 45 minutes.

    Add potatoes and cook for another 15 minutes until lamb is tender and potatoes are cooked.

    Add garam masala, adjust salt. Garnish with cilantro. Serve with steamed rice or roti.
