About Bungamati

Bungamati is a classic Newar village in the Lalitpur district, regarded as the birthplace of Rato Machhendranath (the Red God), one of the most important deities in the Kathmandu Valley. Every 12 years, a grand chariot festival brings the deity from Patan to Bungamati. The village is famous for its traditional woodcarving industry - walking through the streets, you'll see artisans creating intricate wooden statues, window frames, and decorative pieces using techniques passed down through generations. The village square, ancient temples, and surrounding rice terraces offer timeless beauty.
