About Panauti

Panauti is one of the oldest towns in Nepal, a remarkably well-preserved medieval Newar settlement at the confluence of the Punyamati and Roshi rivers. Listed as a tentative UNESCO World Heritage Site, Panauti's compact old town features exquisite 15th-century temples, traditional Newar architecture, and ancient courtyards. The Indreshwar Mahadev Temple, one of the oldest existing temples in Nepal, dates back to 1294 AD. Every 12 years, Panauti hosts the Makar Mela, one of Nepal's biggest religious gatherings. The town has been lovingly restored with community participation.
