Traditional Newari sweet bread - crispy outside, soft inside

Ingredients

  • - 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • - 1/2 cup sugar
  • - 1/2 cup ghee, melted
  • - 1/4 cup milk
  • - 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • - 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • - Pinch of salt
  • - Oil for deep frying

Instructions

    Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, cardamom and salt.

    Add melted ghee and mix until crumbly.

    Add milk gradually and knead into a stiff dough.

    Divide into small balls. Flatten each into a thick disc about 3 inches wide.

    Make decorative patterns on top using a fork or mold.

    Heat oil to medium temperature.

    Fry lakhamari on low-medium heat until golden brown on both sides. They should puff up slightly.

    Drain on paper towels.

    Store in airtight container. Traditionally given as gifts during festivals.
